The PSP had its share of big names and blockbuster franchises, but it also hosted a number of exceptional titles that never reached mainstream popularity. These forgotten PSP games may not have sold millions, but they offered unique experiences, inventive mechanics, and compelling stories. Many of these titles are overdue for a modern comeback, whether through remasters, sequels, or spiritual successors.
One of the most underrated entries in the PSP library is Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together. TUNAS4D While it did see a remake on PSP, it still didn’t reach the level of attention it deserved. With its deeply political narrative, tactical depth, and branching storylines, it offered one of the richest strategy RPG experiences on any platform, handheld or otherwise. A full-scale modern remake on PS5 would likely find a new generation of fans.
Another overlooked gem is The 3rd Birthday, a spiritual successor to the Parasite Eve series. Though the game’s departure from its survival horror roots confused some longtime fans, its ambitious mechanics—such as body-hopping during combat—were ahead of their time. With a more polished narrative and updated visuals, a reboot could easily find a modern audience.
Killzone: Liberation also deserves more recognition. This top-down shooter spin-off of the Killzone series featured surprisingly tight controls, a mature narrative, and engaging co-op gameplay. It was a rare example of a console shooter that translated well to handheld play. With today’s twin-stick technology, a modern version could shine on current-gen platforms.
Even Field Commander, Sony’s answer to Advance Wars, was a tactical gem that flew under the radar. Its deep military strategy, online play, and unit variety made it highly replayable, but it never gained the traction it needed to spawn a sequel. Given the renewed interest in turn-based strategy games, this title is ripe for revival.
These PSP games didn’t just fill out the library—they pushed the platform’s limits and offered innovative gameplay that still holds up. With the popularity of remasters and nostalgia in full swing, the time is right for Sony to revisit these overlooked titles and give them the spotlight they once missed.
